Thankful Thursday – Clarence Glover

On this Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the gifts that Clarence Glover brings to my life. Clarence grew up on Johns Island, graduated from Clemson, and went into the army. He spent his career at the Charleston Navy Shipyard as an engineer. He and his long suffering wife Sarah are pillars at First Baptist Church of Charleston. Clarence has a real sense of humor and is a genuine cut-up. In fact my wife, Carol, says that we can no longer sit together at meetings because we feed off each other and disrupt everything. What I admire most about Clarence other than the fact that what you see is what you get, is that he is able to get to the heart of the matter. He can and does ask the difficult questions that no one else will ask. He served as clerk during part of my term as church moderator. I could count on Clarence to get the minutes both concise and accurate. It is not an easy task. Clarence enjoys flying his own airplane and tried his best to kill me when I was reckless enough to fly with him. When that didn’t work, he flew over the waters surrounding Folly Beach and showed me all of the sharks out there. He clearly indicated that they would enjoy a good Mitch meal. He is devoted to Sarah, his children and grandchildren. Clarence brings a real gift to my life. He is the rare individual who can disagree without being disagreeable. He is a booster of Say Something Nice Sunday. On this Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the presence of Clarence Glover in my life.

Thankful Thursday is a day set aside to recognize the importance of someone to our lives and to let her or him know of our appreciation. Develop an attitude of gratitude. Say Something Nice; Be a Lifter. You will be glad that you did.

What Have I Done Today?

What have I done today that moves me toward my goal? This vital question should be uppermost in your mind. It will help you focus on what you are actually doing to move yourself forward. Notice the wording,”What have I done.” It puts the emphasis where it should be. It is not what has someone else done to help me. It is not who is to blame for my current situation.

What means exactly what; be specific. It is asking for specific steps that you took, not steps you thought about taking and not those you wished you had taken. Today means the preceding twenty-four hours or at least those you were awake. Toward is an important direction. We often take many steps that move us away from our goal. We sabotage ourselves. We daydream. We waste time. We are negative. We play the blame game or we play the victim role

None of this matters if you are not specific about your goal or goals. What do you want to achieve? Make it specific. You must be able to measure it. Make it reasonable. It must be possible given your resources of time, money, and abilities. It must be time oriented. It must provide a reasonable challenge. If it is too difficult or too easy you will stop working toward it. I must also be important to you. If you don’t care then what difference does it make?

This question jumped out at me years ago in remarks made by former University of Alabama and Kentucky football coach Bill Curry. It goes right to the heart of the matter. Do not let a day go by without asking yourself this question and spending some quality time answering it honestly. What you did or did not do yesterday does not matter. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not arrived. What you plan to do tomorrow does not matter. You may or may not do it. We all know about good intentions. It is today that matters.

Question – Key 37

Keep an inquisitive mind. Just because is not an answer. Just because something works doesn’t mean it couldn’t work better. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it should be discarded. Ask open ended questions continuously and listen to the answers. Approach every new experience with an inquisitive mind. Don’t settle for the obvious. Deeper insights come from exploring. I am astonished that the Bible does not say today what it did when I was ten, twenty or sixty even though the words on the page are the same. The same is true for Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s, “How Do I Love Thee?” Question your own beliefs and long held points of view. Learn to ask better and better questions. I believe that asking the right question is often more important than the answer. When I taught an adult Sunday school class, I started each New Year with this statement. “Our goal by the end of this year is to come out with better questions than we have now. If you are here seeking answers, we don’t have any.”  We could spout normal Christian jargon, but that wasn’t our purpose.
