Thankful Thursday – Chuck Rector

I knew Chuck first when he worked with the Salvation Army. Before that he had directed a program for children with disabilities in Florida. Over the past several years Chuck has worked as a cab driver with Yellow Cab. Recently, after many health problems, he switched to another company. Chuck is wonderful as a taxi driver, but his abilities go way beyond that. He is well read, extremely well informed, a humanitarian, and a great story teller. Many years ago he became a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. We have long since passed the driver/passenger relationship. We are friends who enjoy each other’s company.  In the distance between my house and Webster University, we can usually solve all of the world’s major problems. Today I am glad to say that this Thursday I am thankful for Chuck Rector.

Thankful Thursday is my answer to Thirsty Thursday. Every Thursday choose someone that you are thankful for and let him or her know it. You will be glad that you did.

Reduce Stress – Key 48

Stress is a robber of health, vitality, and mental agility. It steals our imagination and our creativity. It dampens our inspiration and destroys relationships. Prioritize what is important and eliminate the trivia. Although you will never totally eradicate stress you can control it rather than allowing it to control you. Take a walk, a nap, meditate, hum a tune or just change your focus. Sara Lowrey, my speech professor at Furman University, was right. When she said, “What a dull world bleak and bare, if there were no time to sit and stare.” Stress is a major factor in the workplace and should be taken very seriously. It can lead to violence if not managed promptly and correctly. You must take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

Katie Would Look Great in Suspenders

Katie CouricWhen Larry King leaves CNN later this year, we will lose the best interviewer on television. Larry has the unique ability and trained skill among the current crop of television interviewers to listen to his guest. He never tries to embarrass the guest or upstage him or her. He says, “I leave my ego at home.” His interviews do not become shouting matches.

Over these many years I have watched and listened as he interviewed everyone from Billy Graham to Lady Gaga and I have admired his ability. He never becomes the show. Sometimes he does drool a little too much with some of the more glamorous stars and fawns a little too much over some athlete that no one cares about; however, if he were in one of my courses on communication he would definitely get an A. When the interview is over, I usually know what the guest thinks. Larry is a professing Jew, and he treats Billy Graham with tremendous respect. He is nuts about Nancy Reagan and he treats Hillary Clinton with the same respect. Even with someone like Netanyahu, who is determined not to say anything of the slightest importance, Larry turns in a good performance.

Katie Couric is the most logical successor to Larry. Katie is an excellent interviewer and given the relaxed nature of a show like Larry’s, she would become even better. Like Larry she knows everyone and is respected by everyone except perhaps Sarah Palin. She knows how to listen and how to follow-up. She puts the interviewee at ease and creates a good atmosphere.

CNN is having its troubles and the departure of Larry will make matters worse for them. The top brass at the cable network would help their cause if they worked out a way to get Katie. I realize that the night belongs to the shouters and the constant conspiracy theorists not to mention the barrage of personality assassins, but so far CNN has proved a voice of reason. CNN should allow Katy to choose the guests. She has all the right contacts and knows who and what matters.

Thankful Thursday – Michael Carnell

Today and every day I am thankful for my son, Michael. Saturday July 24, is his birthday. He and I have been through the usual father/son struggles. He is descended from a long line of control freaks and has inherited his share of the genes. On the other hand, he had a mother who was the most non-judgmental most accepting person I have ever known. Michael inherited a fair share of those genes as well. He is intelligent, a quick learner, creative and compassionate. He is a wonderful father to two of my grandchildren. He knows anything you need to know about computers and lots you don’t need to know about computers. He is an active member of his church, a founder of the British Car Club and the Parrott Head Club. In short he is a son I am very proud of and I am not biased at all. Happy birthday son.

Every Thursday choose someone that you are thankful for and let him or her know how you feel. Telephone, E-mail or send a card to him or her. You will be glad that you did. It only takes a minute.

Communicate – Key 47

Most of us are not mind readers. You need to communicate your thoughts, your wishes and your dreams. You also need to listen to your partner’s response or lack of responses. Communication is a two way street. Remember that you are always communicating something. You are always on stage. Be sure you are communicating the message you really want to send. If you are unclear or evasive we will supply the missing information and it most likely will not be accurate. There is never a vacuum of information. People cannot tolerate not knowing; therefore, they make up what they do not know. If there is something that I should know, you tell me. Be mindful of your body language. Everything about you enhances or distorts your message. Body language is anything other than your actual words.
