Set Goals – Key 44

What are your priorities for your life, your relationships, your work, your spiritual development? Give each of these areas of your life serious thought. Develop meaningful goals for every part of your life. Write them down or they are just wishful thinking. Put them where you can read them every morning and every night. Review and revise as life changes.  Develop action steps that move you forward. At the end of every day, ask yourself this question and answer it honestly. What have I done today that moves me toward my goal?  Setting meaningful, relevant goals is a vital aspect of self-leadership. You are not depending on a supervisor or someone else to impose them. You are in charge of you. Setting your own goals gives you a major boost on your journey.

Get the Job Done on the Gulf

I spent four wonderful years in Baton Rouge. Both Suzanne and Michael were born in Baptist Hospital there. We had great friends at LSU, the Cerebral Palsy Center and Goodwood Baptist Church. We went to New Orleans as often as possible mainly to take the children to Audubon Park. We spent many Saturday or Sunday afternoons driving through the countryside. If we had not been on such a tight shoestring we would have done more. Louisiana is a beautiful place with two distinct areas much like South Carolina.

What I remember most are the wonderful people we met. Families brought lots of fresh vegetables to the staff at the Cerebral Palsy Center. There were hot tamale vendors on the streets. The folks in the speech department at LSU were like one great big family. I have never regretted moving to Charleston, but it was very hard to leave Baton Rouge.

I am absolutely heartsick about the tragedy on the Gulf and even sicker about the ineptness or unwillingness of BP and the federal government to act cohesively and decisively to get things done. I know that it is much harder than I realize but I also know how ingenious ordinary citizens can be when given an opportunity. I know also that the politicians will use every opportunity to criticize the other party, but much more is at stake than any one person’s career. President Obama should put one person at the helm whose word is law. Declare a national emergency if that is what it takes. Do whatever is necessary to get the job done. There will be years to point fingers, but right now get the job done.

Transform Thirsty Thursday into Thankful Thursday

The Charleston, South Carolina River Dogs, a Class A baseball team, promotes Thirsty Thursday as a beer promotion in order to increase attendance at their games. It seems to be very successful although you don’t want to be on the nearby highways after the game.

Thirsty Thursday is a good idea not for beer promotion but for all the people who are thirsty for recognition, for someone to recognize their work or simply to appreciate them. Over and over again you hear the complaint no one cares that I am even here. That’s why the yarn about a poor fellow in New York City who died at his desk and was not discovered for five days took traction. There are times when we all feel that way. It does not need to be this way. We can change it. We do not need to wait for a manager or supervisor to change the atmosphere.

Resolve to transform Thirsty Thursday into Thankful Thursday. Each Thursday choose someone who has been helpful to you in some way and thank him or her. Telephone the person, write him or her a note or share the message in person. Both of you will receive a high from the experience but without the calories or dangerous side effects. Put a reminder on your desk, mirror or refrigerator. This is Thankful Thursday and I am thankful for______________. When you follow through, you will be amazed at the results. Expect the person to be embarrassed or skeptical, but do it anyway. You will experience a phenomenal reaction. The more you express your gratitude, the more thankful you will become.

Did You Receive a Compliment at Work Today?

Dr. Caliandro at FBC

Did you receive a compliment at work today? What about positive reinforcement or constructive feedback? Neither did most of the people you know. Day in and day out the great majority go to work and come home from work without hearing anyone say, “I’m glad you were here today. You really make a difference.”

What about your family? Did they say anything positive to you today? Did you say anything uplifting to your spouse or children today? “I missed you. I’m proud of you. You did a great job on that algebra test. Your room looks great.”

Yesterday was Sunday. What did you say to your priest, minister, or rabbi on Saturday? Did you say something encouraging to the person sitting next to you or in front or behind you? Did you thank any member of the choir, the organist, pianist, guitarist or soloist? Did you greet anyone or smile at anyone?

What simple things these are! They require very little time and no money. Do you know anyone who doesn’t need encouragement? Neither do I. Why do we withhold these simple gestures? We can change this pattern. It will take each of us, but we can do it.

Respect – Key 43

Every person deserves our respect.  We are not required to like everyone, agree with his or her position nor approve of his or her behavior. We are required to respect a fellow human being because all of us are confronted by the struggles of life. Each person is a work of art an original. There are no duplicates. When my dear friend Tita died, Charlie, her husband, told me when he was about to remarry, “I knew that there was not another Tita out there; so, I never looked for one.” He found happiness with another unique individual. How different our world would be if we learned to respect one another and appreciate each other’s uniqueness. There is so much that we can learn from others and they can learn from us.  Respect is the key that will open the door.
