Play – Key 31

Play

Make time to play. Life can’t be all work.  Have some fun. Try something new. Enlist your friends. Form a team or club. Play is not only a physical exercise, but it is also a mental exercise. It is an attitude that turns work into play. Work can be fun and still be productive. It is really an attitude adjustment. You can create that kind of an atmosphere. Read, Fish. Give a copy to your boss. Put it into practice.

Keep Learning – Key 30

Keep learning

Resolve to learn at least one new thing every day. With the speed of knowledge today there is plenty to learn. Take advantage of bits and pieces of time to learn. Keep a book or magazine with you and read in those waits at the airport or the doctor’s office. Listen to your friends. Ask questions. Read the newspaper. Go to the library. Watch the news. My graduate students are among the younger generation that does not read newspapers. After a semester of being required to do so, most confess that they have not only enjoyed the assignment, but intend to keep up the practice after they leave my class. Take notes on ideas that interest you so that you can do further research later.

Laugh! Key – 29

Don’t take life or yourself so seriously. Life is too short, too dear to be so intense every minute of every day.Surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Watch funny movies. Read funny stories. Share a laugh with friends. Lighten up.

Involve yourself in causes that you believe in. Join a team, a church, a gym, a community action group. Volunteer. You are needed. There are more opportunities to be helpful than you can ever imagine. Our nation runs on volunteers. Ask your friends what they do. Every community, organization or church needs helping hands, active brains and warm hearts. Tutor a child. Read to children in the hospital or to those who have lost their sight. Drive a neighbor to a doctor’s appointment or to the market.

Cultivate and Nourish Relationships – Key 27

Cultivate and Nourish Relationships

Strong and varied relationships are essential for continued well being. Meet new people. Nurture the relationships that you already have. Renew old friendships. Long term friendships are the secret to well being especially as we mature. In order to make a friend you first have to be a friend. Put yourself in a position to meet new friends. Join a church, a social club, a dinner group, a book club, a bridge club or a dance club. You will not meet new friends in your den watching television. Volunteer with the United Way or some other worthy organization. Mingle. Research shows that people who have enduring relationships not only live
